Ma Wan (c 1995)

Ma Wan (馬灣), a lesser-known island off the coast of Tsuen Wan (荃灣) in between Lantau Island (大嶼山) and Tsing Yi Island (青衣). Before the move of the Kai Tak international Airport (啓德機場) to Chek Lap Kok (赤鱲角) in 1998, this little island was seldom visited by locals. The only transport at the time was an hourly ferry service connecting to Sham Tseng (深井), which ceased service in 2003 due to competition.

The following photos were taken circa 1995. Tsing Ma Bridge (青馬大橋) was near completion and the Ting Kau Bridge (汀九橋) had its last module installed. The tranquil village life on Ma Wan was on the blink of urbanisation.
